Artists have no doubt that in the first place Gobelin Tapestry is an ancient kind of art capable of expressing various ideas by means of symbolic language.
In contemporary world of art there are at least two synonymous terms denoting artistic textile (in a broad sense): Spalier (comes from German) and Gobelin (of French origin). Initially the word gobelin was used to call the produce of The Gobelins Manufactory which appeared in Paris back in the 17th century. Both terms were adopted in the Russian language in the 18th century (St.Petersburg Spalier Workshop established in 1717 had a major influence in that). Nowadays the word gobelin is commonly used in everyday artistic life, whereas the term spalier is accepted in more specific scientific environment (descriptions of museum collections, reference books and publications).
